Sand Hollow State Park is the warm-water, red-rock playground about 10 minutes from most Hurricane vacation rentals — reservoir for boats and swim days, Sand Mountain for OHVs, and a gate that backs up on summer Saturdays if you wing it. Why it fits a vacation-rental week

Zion rewards early alarms. Sand Hollow rewards a house with a kitchen, garage parking for a trailer or UTV, and a private pool for the second rinse of the day. Keep one “water and dunes” day on the calendar for every two canyon days and the whole group stays happier — especially mixed ages.

Paying day-use online before you leave the rental often beats the in-person payment line when the gate is busy. Day-use covers park hours only — if you stay after hours, you need camping or the after-hours fishing option from the visitor center.

Boat ramps and beating the weekend line

There are two main launch patterns guests actually use:

• Westside Boat Ramp — Larger, busier, next to Westside Campground. Expect waits on summer weekends; aim to be in line closer to opening than to brunch.
• South-end / smaller ramp area — Better for smaller craft and PWC on crowded days; ski boats usually want Westside.

Courtesy docks pack out midday. The park does not generally “close the lake,” but loading and unloading gets slow. Dunes, OHVs, and what to book ahead

Utah requires mussel-awareness compliance before launching, including for many non-motorized craft. Out-of-state boats face inspection expectations; ski/wake boats with ballast have dry-time / decontamination rules. Decontamination hours at Sand Hollow are commonly 7:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. May–September and 7:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. October–April (closed Thanksgiving and Christmas). Take the quagga education course ahead of time and bring proof — nothing kills a rental Saturday like failing the launch check with kids already in swimsuits.

Quail Creek vs. Sand Hollow for one day

Both reservoirs sit near Hurricane. Sand Hollow wins for dunes + warmer swim culture and the bigger day-use scene. Quail Creek is often the quieter water day when Sand Hollow’s gate looks ugly. Keep both as options from the same house; you decide at breakfast based on wind, crowd reports, and whether anyone needs a boat ramp.

2. Early morning — One driver to the ramp/gate; rest of group follows after coffee at the house.
